The Importance of Starting

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Notes about this Quotation
Although this is the popular form of this quotation, a more correct translation from the original Chinese would be “The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.” Rather than emphasizing the first step, Lau Tzu regarded action as something that arises naturally from stillness. Another potential phrasing would be “Even the longest journey must begin where you stand.” [note by Michael Moncur, September 01, 2004]

I’ve found that once I get started, things build up steam. They may not be perfect from the start, and they may not even be good, but having something to build on makes building a lot easier. I’m experiencing this with this blog. For example, I use WordPress for my blogging software. To start with, I grabbed a couple of public wordpress templates to do the look of the blog. At first, I couldn’t find a template that was close to what I wanted, so I used something that worked. After a while, I found a wordpress template that was closer to what I wanted. Now that I have that, I’ve started customizing the look of the blog to continue to get the look and feel to be exactly what I want it to be. But, if I had never used a template that I knew wasn’t perfect, I would never have gotten as far as I have and I wouldn’t be proud of the look of the blog, because I may not even have a blog.
I think this shows the importance of just getting started. Making that first step gives you something to build on, and the fact that you can then keep building on what you have leads to great accomplishments. I know from the progress I’ve made on the look and feel of the blog that soon, not only will I have it exactly how I want it, but I will know I have the ability to make any changes down the road when something comes up. It is the confidence that I can come through with a finished product that makes it all worthwhile, because that is a confidence that can be applied to all aspects of life and everything I do.
